As the daughter of Bundjalung and Ngāpuhi parents - members of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and Māori in New Zealand - award-winning multidisciplinary artist Amrita Hepi has experienced colonial violence.
From this experience, Hepi's Rinse challenges Western cultures' focus on linear narratives of time and the myth of a 'single origin'. Beyond the assertion that there must be a beginning, an intimate dance solo unfolds that moves through history, theory, pop culture and colonial narratives. In doing so, she places her own complex identity in relation to a reality that is increasingly coming apart at the seams.
An in-between space of beginning and end - as a physical meditation on being alone in the world. In the tension between self-assertion and dissolution, the solo points to a different idea of identity and collectivity: not as a harmonious unity, but as a fragile relationship that must always be rethought - also, and especially, from the perspective of the individual.
Amrita Hepi currently lives and works in Naarm (Melbourne) and Bangkok. At the center of her artistic interest is the archive - particularly in relation to the body and the question of how it is shaped and organized by origins, events, relationships and environment.
She has received several awards, including the Keir Choreographic Award Audience Award twice and was included in the Forbes "30 under 30" list for art. Rinse was invited to perform at the prestigious Avignon Festival this summer.
