At a time when global mobility, cultural mixing and personal identity issues are becoming ever more pressing, the exhibition "Roots...Routes" opens up two very personal artistic perspectives on origin and belonging.
The photographic work "suchen um zu finden - szukać żeby znaleźć - chercher pour trouver" follows Luc Samuel Wrobel on his search for family and cultural roots in Germany, Poland and France. The motif of longing for home and stories of intergenerational migration are the central themes of his photographic and text-based exploration. The aspect of oral history and its role in documentary photography is particularly evident in his work. Despite the intimate plot of the work, the artist creates a photographic distance that is broken up by his text-based accompaniment.
Opposite is the multimedia work entitled "Der Körper in der Mitte, der Ich bin" by Noelle Amelia Ehrenfeld. Through the combination of analog collages and augmented reality, she makes her sensual experiences with Guyanese culture tangible. The analog collages on the walls are visual compilations of photographs from Germany and Guyana. They reflect the interfaces that shape her life and moments in which different homelands come together in her personality. In addition to the collages, an AR installation invites visitors to experience a further immersive level of perception. Using a tablet or their own smartphone, fragmented objects scanned from Ehrenfeld in Guyana can be explored independently.
"Roots...Routes" invites you to embark on a journey between memories and the present and to trace your own roots.
Curated by Alina Godglück and Sumru Tekin.
Supported by the Kunst und Kulturstiftung der Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf, Der Kreis der Freunde des Instituts für Kunstgeschichte der Heinrich-Heine Universität e.V. and the Studierendenparlament der HHU.

Opposite is Noelle Amelia Ehrenfeld's multimedia work titled "Der Körper in der Mitte, der Ich bin" (The Body inbetween, Me), in which she showcases analog collages and augmented reality to bring her sensory encounters with Guyanese culture to life. The analog collages are a visual compilation of photographs taken in Germany and Guyana. They reflect intersectional moments and objects that shape her life. These are moments of collision between home and identity. Next to the collages is an AR-installation, that invites visitors to experience an additional level of immersion. Using the provided tablet or the personal Phone one can explore fragmented objects throughout the room. These are 3D-scanned objects found in Guyana and Germany, compiled into digital hybrid sculptures.
Roots...Routes invites you to embark on a journey to trace your own roots, accompanied by memories and present moments.
