SACHEN GIBT’S!

In the organizer's words:

There are things - and not in short supply. Over the last 150 years, tens of thousands of objects have found their way into our collection, and the number is constantly growing. In the exhibition, we take a closer look at around 50 of them. Many are on display for the first time, most of them are otherwise stored in the depot. Together, they take us on a journey through over 1,000 years of the city's history - from the first mention of Erlangen to the coronavirus pandemic - and add many new aspects and perspectives to the permanent exhibition.

Museum objects come to life when you ask them questions. Some of them are almost obvious: What do the Prussians have to do with the Franks? How did the unicorn end up in Einhornstraße? Other objects are mysterious: What impact did an unadorned wooden stick have on everyday life in Erlangen? How did a chunk of sandstone from inside Erlangen Castle Hill end up in the museum? Some objects tell you things you may have always wanted to know about Erlangen but never dared to ask: Why is the old town newer than the new town? Where did the "Seekuh" actually sail? And still others raise more questions than they can answer.

The exhibition tells how two Erlangen students "invented" Franconian Switzerland or why the reputation of Erlangen beer reached as far as the Balkans. Toy figures from the Nazi era illustrate how even children were indoctrinated in the ways of the regime. A parking meter stands for the change in Erlangen's transport policy, a protest banner from the "climate camp" for current debates on climate protection.

Whether large or small, magnificent or inconspicuous. All the "things" on display have one thing in common: they shed light on curious, questionable and interesting facts about Erlangen and show diverse, surprising and often new facets of the city's history.
