30 recommendations to make our state work better, with Peer Steinbrück and Patrick Oelze
Trust in the state's ability to act is dwindling - and with it confidence in the democratic order. However, Germany has proven time and again in its history that it can not only cope with major changes, but also actively shape them.
As part of a joint event, Peer Steinbrück will discuss the central issues of the state's ability to reform. The starting point is the program paper published in July by the Initiative for a State Capable of Acting, which presents thirty concrete proposals on how trust in our community can be restored and how political action can be made effective again. This reform agenda was presented by Julia Jäkel, Thomas de Maizière, Peer Steinbrück and Andreas Voßkuhle and was published as a book by Herder.
The central question is: How can the state renew itself in order to react decisively and democratically to the challenges of our time? What reforms are needed in administration, legislation and political culture - and how can the will to change be translated into practical government action?
The discussion opens up a debate on the relationship between the demands and reality of the state's ability to govern - and on paths to a new democratic awakening.
Peer Steinbrück, born in 1947, was Federal Minister of Finance (2005-2009) and Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia (2002-2005). As the SPD's candidate for chancellor, he ran for the office of Federal Chancellor in 2013. After leaving the Bundestag in September 2016, Peer Steinbrück took over as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation.
Patrick Oelze from the publishing house Herder will moderate.
