What do you do when you find out that there was a spy in your own family who was executed by the Nazis? Author Marcel Krueger discovers that his great-uncle Franz Nerowski enlisted as a Polish spy against Nazi Germany in the 1930s - a fact that remained hidden from the family for two generations.

In his latest, as yet unpublished book project, German-Irish author Marcel Krueger tells the story of Franz Nerowski, of East Prussia, the dark alleyways of Berlin, the battlefields of the Second World War and the penitentiaries in Berlin and Brandenburg. "Schattenland" is a personal and exciting spy story that raises questions about resistance, identity and loyalty.

In 2019, Marcel Krueger was chosen by the jury of the German Cultural Forum for Eastern Europe as the 2019 City Writer of Allenstein/Olsztyn. In 2026, his new book "Seenland. A Personal History of Warmia" will be published by KJM Verlag in Hamburg in 2026.
