George Bailey (James Stewart) has not achieved any of his great goals in life. He had actually planned to travel the world, but his father's stroke forced him into the position of managing director of his father's company, even though he would have loved to leave it behind. When, after several years of marriage and four children, he still hasn't achieved any of the goals he set himself and 8,000 dollars from the company's coffers go missing at Christmas of all times, he wants to put an end to his life. Bailey sees no way out and is now facing prison for embezzlement. The most influential man in town, Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore), does not want to help him, but instead wants to put George under the knife. But his family and friends have not forgotten him. In answer to their prayers, the angel Clarence (Henry Travers), who has yet to earn his wings, is sent down to prevent George's suicide...
