A spiritual continuation of the now defunct band Sprain, Shearling is the reunion of a decade-old collaboration between guitarists Alexander Kent and Sylvie Simmons. The subsequent recruitment of drummer Andrew Chanover, bassist Wesley Nelson and keyboardist Elizabeth Carver completed their orchestrally oriented line-up. In their first year, the band largely kept a low profile, forgoing live performances and focusing instead on their bold debut album "Motherfucker, I am Both: 'Amen' and 'Hallelujah'...". The record retains Sprain's trademark intensity, further mutated by a newfound collage approach. With only a single song spanning over an hour, "Motherfucker" is a demanding demonstration of uncompromising ethics. Shearling's aggressive live performances and meticulous recordings are testament to an ambition, boldness and emotional vulnerability that few contemporary bands can match.
