Shining

A lonely hotel. A harsh winter. A family - and the evil that slowly takes root in their minds. With The Shining, Theater Essen-Süd brings one of Stephen King's most famous and eerie stories to the stage. Atmospherically dense, psychologically oppressive and full of dark abysses.

Jack Torrance, a failed writer with a past, takes a job as janitor at the remote Overlook Hotel. He retreats for the winter with his wife Wendy and their sensitive son Danny - far away from civilization. But the hotel is alive. And Danny senses it. Because he has the "shining" - a psychic gift that allows him to see things that others cannot.

What begins as an opportunity for a fresh start turns into a nightmare. The boundaries between reality and madness become blurred. Demons from the past awaken - in Jack, in the hotel, and perhaps also in the audience.

The production at Theater Essen-Süd focuses on the psychological tensions and the destructive power of silence, fear and isolation. Close to the audience, intensely acted, with goosebumps guaranteed.
