A majestic ginkgo tree stands in the heart of the botanical gardens of the medieval university town of Marburg. It has accompanied people's lives for centuries and is a silent witness to profound changes and events. In 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong researching the cognitive development of babies ventures an unusual experiment with the old tree. In 1972, a young student experiences an inner transformation - triggered by the concentrated observation of a geranium. In 1908, the university's first female student follows her passion for photography - and discovers the hidden patterns of the universe through the lens of her camera.

With SILENT FRIEND, Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi presents a poetic, sensitive work in which the relationship between plants and people becomes a symbol of the universal longing for connection. In the silent attempts of her protagonists to connect with the world, nature and themselves, a touching story about belonging, change - and the beauty of longing - unfolds.
