Rhythm has always been more than just measuring time.
It is innate, instinctive and ritualistic. The first communal act shared even before language. It has always been the core of what it means to be human, the backbone of millennia of singing, dancing and connection. It is with this original understanding that Munich percussionist Simon Popp approaches his new album "Trio", the first he has recorded in collaboration with two other percussionists, Sebastian Wolfgruber and Flurin Mück.
Music as a means of coming together, a sonic equivalent of the Japanese Kintsugi philosophy, in which broken ceramics are visibly repaired with golden lacquer. Instead of hiding the breaks, Kintsugi embraces them and makes them part of the story, a form of delicate transformation. Popp and his fellow musicians follow a similar approach: three different drummers, three temperaments, three personal styles - fused into a single expressive instrument.
