Sincerely Yours, the Philippines - Festival für Tanz, Performance, Karaoke

In the organizer's words:

Between karaoke and performance, indigenous healing practices and the realities of life for migrant workers, between maximalist fiesta and minimalist interventions, Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm is dedicating the eleven-day festival "Sincerely Yours, the Philippines" to the performative arts of the Philippines for the first time.

Curated by choreographer Eisa Jocson, who has been an associated artist at Mousonturm for many years, the program presents seven extraordinary works by artists from different generations - from the island nation itself as well as from the diaspora. Each piece, including five world premieres, sheds light on the complex Philippine culture, its history and present - shaped by colonialism, dictatorship, economic instability and the global export of labor, but also by resilience and a deep sense of care - from a unique perspective.

Many of the pieces are linked by an exploration of song and voice. Singing has always been a means of passing on knowledge and ensuring survival in the Philippines. Today's timbres also reflect traces of the colonial past - shaped, as the saying goes, "by 400 years of Spanish monasteries and 50 years of Hollywood".

Sometimes playful and virtuosic, sometimes delicate and tentative, the festival artists change pitches and registers. They make voices and stories audible and visible that have long been ignored or marginalized. Workshops, talks and parties complement the program and - together with the performances - provide a multi-layered insight into one of Southeast Asia's most innovative art scenes.
