The composer Emilie Mayer is currently being rediscovered and is gaining increasing recognition. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she not only wrote piano pieces and songs, but also symphonies, string quartets and overtures - including the powerfully elegant Overture No. 2 in D major. Beethoven's contemporary Bernhard Romberg is also being rediscovered. His flute concerto in B minor became particularly well-known through the flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and is now an integral part of the flute literature. The soloist in the concerto is Asia Safikhanova from the Giessen Philharmonic Orchestra. With Finlandia, Jean Sibelius created a work of great popularity that became a musical symbol of Finnish national consciousness around 1900. Finally, Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations" enigmatically portray people from his surroundings - sometimes humorously, sometimes lovingly - and invite you to join in the guessing.
