Symphony concert: Pretty best enemies

Three composers - three squabblers - and plenty of masterpieces! Richard Wagner, Hugo Wolf and Johannes Brahms were united by one thing above all: a well-cultivated enmity. However, this did not stop them from each composing first-class works.

The Duisburg Studio Orchestra not only stands for great diversity among its musicians, but also presents a varied program at this concert:

• Richard Wagner "Tannhäuser" Overture
• Hugo Wolf Orchestral songs and arias
• Johannes Brahms Tragic Overture in D minor op. 81
• Johannes Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 4, 5 and 10

The overture from Wagner's "Tannhäuser" provides the audience with an exciting opening to the program: the inner contemplation of the pilgrims' chorus contrasts sensually and seductively with the musical theme of the Venusberg.

The orchestral songs by Hugo Wolf also stand for passion and poetry with their dramaturgy. Every single word of the poems set to music is musically depicted and accompanied by the orchestra. Every note of the incidental music in "The Feast of Solhaug" also tells of a romantic drama of jealousy.

The "Hungarian Dances" by Johannes Brahms are no less passionate. He brings Hungarian folk music to life with a great deal of passion, temperament and a touch of melancholy.
