SPIELART Festival: DAMBUDZO

In the organizer's words:

"The street comes into the house and the house is the street." This is how choreographer nora chipaumire describes informal bars in the private homes of Zimbabwe's black population that were established during the British colonial era, so-called "shebeens". African workers, teachers, students and families met here to chat and spend time together to the sounds of popular jit music in their native language. Alongside eight performers, the audience moves freely through an installation of wood and cardboard inspired by "Shebeens", divided by transparent, large-format paintings that create either intimate retreats or transform into larger communal spaces. Through the combination of music, painting and dance, the performance develops into an exuberant concert: in memory of revolutionary thinkers such as Dambudzo Marechera (1952 - 1987) and in reference to the Shona word "dambudzo" [meaning "anger"], an atmosphere of unrest, resistance, but also of hope and new beginnings is created.
