SPIELART Festival: VETA NEGRA (VARIATION)

In the organizer's words:

European premiere

With the impressive solo performance VETA NEGRA [engl. "black vein"], director Carlos Cruz follows the traces of his own family history to Real del Monte, one of the most important mining regions in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. Colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century, the region experienced a boom due to the introduction of an effective but extremely harmful method of extracting silver. This deadly process of amalgamation with the feet was carried out by African slaves and indigenous forced laborers and becomes the starting point for Carlos Cruz's macabre dance. He draws inspiration from Butoh, a Japanese dance theater that plays with grotesque movements and breaks in form: Crawling, digging and trembling, he approaches the miners who have been maltreated to death, thus exposing the long-buried history of exploitation for the benefit of European prosperity - a fight against the forgetting of colonial crimes on the American continent.
