"STILL ALIVE" - PUNK. HARDCORE. STRAIGHT EDGE.

Punk is dead, right? At the latest during the long concert break caused by the corona pandemic, you might have thought so. But since its end, the opposite seems to have happened and the DIY and hardcore scene seems more alive than it has for a long time. Even after more than four decades, hardcore kids are still somersaulting off the stage, jumping through the mosh pit in a two-step and painting a black X on the back of their hand as a commitment to the drug-free straight edge movement. "still alive" accompanies those who keep this subculture alive.

In addition to bands, organizers and a photographer, the film also features otherwise less noticed helpers at the entrance or bar, as well as people who work invisibly behind the scenes, for example in the kitchen or elsewhere in the backstage area. Their motivation always stems from a passion for music and the desire to translate abstract topics such as equal rights, self-organization and criticism of capitalism into concrete action.

This documentary was produced at the Karlsruhe University of Music, at the Institute for Music Journalism there, as a contribution to Volume Magazine, a music blog about the alternative music scene that director Steinert himself runs, with a focus on his region, the Rhine-Main-Neckar area.
