by Tennesse Williams // Directed by Max Lindemann
Somewhere on the Gulf Coast: the handsome Chance Wayne returns to his hometown of St. Cloud. He accompanies the famous actress Alexandra del Lago, who considers her comeback in the film business a failure and is therefore seeking a retreat from the public eye. Meanwhile, Chance is hoping for a reunion with his childhood sweetheart Heavenly Finley, who had to undergo a fatal operation while he was away. Heavenly is at the mercy of her well-known father, boss Tom Finley, who gives racist diatribes. He prevents further contact between the former lovers. Unhappy in love, Chance seeks success as an actor. Alexandra del Lago is supposed to help him with her promising contacts and so the lonely figures cling to each other in the hope of finding happiness. In the end, however, they both have to realize that the transience of time does not stop at their dreams.
Max Lindemann, who is already well-known in Frankfurt for his production of "Phaedra in Flames", presents Williams' American classic with a pointed reduction of means and ruthless sobriety. The white cube that forms the stage makes everything visible: from the self-portrayal to the fragile vulnerabilities of the characters.
