Sylvia - a chamber opera based on the life, relationship and poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes.
For over 20 years, the internationally renowned pianist, composer and improviser Simon Nabatov has repeatedly returned to a central theme of his musical work: the combination of music and literature - be it purely instrumental or in combination with sung or spoken texts.
In recent years, he has created a series of chamber music works, some of which have already been performed in the BLACK BOX at CUBA. From this, the desire to expand his musical-literary work with a new format developed: a chamber opera - with a libretto, continuous plot, multi-layered characters, dramaturgical structure and scenic elements.
This time, Nabatov chose the relationship between Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes as his literary model. Plath, an American poet with a keen eye for inner conflicts, and Hughes, one of the most influential English poets of the 20th century, were linked by an intense and complex partnership. Their mutual artistic influence, but also emotional tensions and personal crises are at the heart of the opera - right up to Plath's suicide in 1963.
The composition will be performed by a top-class chamber ensemble of selected contemporary and improvised musicians and complemented by live electronics. The project will also be enhanced by scenic elements such as video projections and props.
The libretto was written by Thomas Wenzler, an experienced dramaturge and theater director, who precisely explores the tension between text and music. The video installations were developed by Pavel Borodin.
