Aladin El-Mafaalani's latest book "Communities of Distrust" offers an explanation for the rise of populism and conspiracy ideologies.
It is written for anyone who wants to understand why trust is becoming ever more important, but mistrust ever more likely, and what the consequences of widespread crises of trust are for society.
In an increasingly complex society, you have to trust. Without trust in social systems and institutions, we become incapable of acting. To avoid becoming incapable of acting as a mistrustful person, there is a plausible alternative: trust those who also mistrust. And not on the basis of their competence or experience, but solely on the basis of shared mistrust. Communities of mistrust are created - a danger to social stability.
