Opening concert of the 21st International Festival for Frame Drums

The frame drum axis "New York-Freiburg" is an important constant in the festival program and an expression of great appreciation. Nevertheless, this evening describes a novelty: for the first time, Freiburg world percussionist Murat Coşkun and multiple Grammy award winner Glen Velez (USA) will be on stage as a duo.

It is an interplay between two frame drum masters whose playing combines intimacy, a love of improvisation and a love of clear forms. They enjoy the moment, inspired by the moment and what the other person's music tells them. They rely on their intuition, let their instruments speak, but also draw on the familiar, on the experiences of numerous tours together, on which they have shared the stages. Indian, shamanic and Turkish-Arabic elements find expression in their compositions. Glen Velez's Mexican roots are just as palpable as Murat Coşkun's connection to Turkish music

This year's festival theme Simplicity serves as a guideline. Velez and Coşkun show the power, beauty, clarity, joie de vivre and also the appeal of simplicity that people often long for.

Two generations meet: Glen Velez has created a new genre of drumming with his very own performance style - inspired by years of studying percussion and frame drums from different cultures. His virtuoso playing and original compositional style, which incorporates drum language and Central Asian overtone singing, have opened up new paths for musicians all over the world.

Murat Coşkun has learned a lot from him and has adopted essential elements for his own playing. Velez was an important guide for him, so that the great frame drum vision Tamburi Mundi could become a reality in Freiburg.
