Few bands manage to provide the perfect soundtrack for almost every situation in life - be it the lonely walk home after a long night out, the big moment at a wedding, or the first day of an unforgettable vacation. The Paper Kites are just such a band. Their origin story sounds almost like something out of a novel: five close school friends who form a band purely for fun - and have now been traveling the world and playing concerts together for over ten years. It all started with singer and guitarist Sam Bentley and keyboardist Christina Lacy, who wrote their first songs while still at school in Melbourne. They were soon joined by guitarist David Powys, bassist Samuel Rasmussen and drummer Josh Bentley.
For their first song "Bloom", they recorded CDs on their own and sold them themselves - bit by bit, the music spread until the track became a worldwide success with over 750 million streams. The band used this tailwind in 2012 for their debut EP "Woodland" and their first Australian tour. They cemented their reputation as one of the most exciting new voices in modern folk with their debut album "States" (2013). This was followed by "twelvefour" (2015), a concept album whose songs were written exclusively at night, as well as the twin works "On the Train Ride Home" and "On the Corner Where You Live" (2018). With "Roses", which followed in 2021, they presented duets with artists such as Julia Stone, Lucy Rose and Maro. For their sixth studio album "At the Roadhouse", the band moved into an old warehouse, wrote new songs and played them week after week in front of the local community. This resulted in recordings full of closeness and authenticity, between folk, blues and Americana.
Now the next chapter is about to begin: their seventh album "If You Go There, I Hope You Find It" will be released in January. Recorded at the legendary Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne and produced by Grammy award-winner Jon Low, it impresses with its intimate, reflective mood. Each song feels like a quiet conversation that provides a sense of security, while the band remains true to their atmospheric sound.
Listening to this album, you can feel the incomparable tension and closeness that they create live - their declared aim is always to invite the audience into their musical home. To accompany the new album, The Paper Kites will embark on a major European and UK tour in 2026, during which they will return to Germany for three exclusive concerts. They will be supported by British indie folk singer Bess Atwell. The perfect combination for magical nights!
