This famous Chinese film classic is based on the short novel of the same name by Lao She and was directed by SHI Hui, who also played the leading role. The film follows the life of an old Beijing policeman and his family over almost five decades, from the fall of the Qing dynasty to the rise of Chinese communism after the Second World War.
