Tribute to Coco Schumann – Erinnerung in Klang und Bild

In the organizer's words:

Alexander Kranich & Kranich Kollektiv live at PARABEL Hamburg

On Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 6 pm, PARABEL Hamburg invites you to the concert "Tribute to Coco Schumann". Hamburg guitarist Alexander Kranich and his Kranich Kollektiv are dedicating themselves to the music of the great jazz guitarist Coco Schumann (1924-2018) - played on Schumann's original Gibson guitar.

Coco Schumann was a formative voice of German jazz. As a member of the "Ghetto Swingers", he survived Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Dachau. After the war, he performed on stage with Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich and Louis Armstrong. His music told of hope, humanity and joie de vivre - even in the darkest times.

Alexander Kranich got to know Schumann personally in 2013. With a keen sense and great respect, he brings his compositions back to life - as a timeless testimony to music that tells of life, not suffering.

The concert takes place as part of the exhibition
"In the Abyss. Terror, Violence and the Arts in Germany 1930 to after 2000" (curated by Dr. Maike Bruhns and Dr. Pablo Schneider).
The exhibition shows over 75 works that deal with violence, memory and the traces of history - and asks how art can become an expression of empathy and resistance.
Visitors can view the exhibition during the break.
