SHAHNAMEH

Shahnameh (engl. "Book of Kings") is one of the most famous works of world literature and tells the story of the creation of the Persian-speaking world. The newly founded trio "Elshan Ghasimi & Philipp Püschel & Joss Turnbul" now transposes this epic into the present and develops a new concert format from it. Elshan Ghasimi is a singer and virtuoso of the Persian long-necked lute Tar. Together with jazz trumpeter Philipp Püschel and experimental percussionist Joss Turnbull, who enhance their instruments with analog effects and live electronics, she enters into a trialogue between tradition and modernity.

Based on "RADIF", the classical Persian art music and inspired by the Shahnameh texts of the author Abū ʾl-Qāsim Firdausī (940-1020), the trio looks at the Eastern tradition from a modern perspective. Through jazz, free improvisation of tar, percussion and trumpet as well as electronic sounds, Ghasimi, Püschel & Turnbull want to interact in duo and trio combinations in a way that reflects togetherness and different musical cultures.
