Seismograph of the soul: it is not for nothing that Akram Khan is considered a decisive pacemaker of our time. Few choreographers have such a keen sense of the human psyche. Few, too, who plumb the hidden depths as thoroughly as he does. In summer 2025, Akram Khan will collaborate with Gauthier Dance for the first time. The starting point will be excerpts from four productions that have become classics, which can be traced back to himself or the Akram Khan Company. The title Turning of Bones not only alludes to a ritual of remembrance practiced mainly in Madagascar - Famadihana - in which people take the remains of their ancestors wrapped in cloth from their graves in order to reconnect with their heritage. They write the names on the shrouds, carry the bones over their heads and dance with them. Famadihana could also describe the approach of this production, in which Akram Khan immerses himself in the history of his own choreographic works. The selection focuses on the feeling of dissatisfaction and the search for meaning that characterize our increasingly disoriented society.
In contrast to the elaborate sets and backdrops of the original versions, Akram Khan aims for a more abstract mood for the evening, focusing on dance and pure emotion.
