Take a look behind the scenes of an opera with us - free of charge! We discuss with various people involved in the respective production and then use these insights to visit a rehearsal. While you get a taste of a stage orchestra rehearsal at the opera, you can see and hear the entire rehearsal at the theater.

About FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN:

Written at the beginning of the 20th century, when homosexuality was still punishable by imprisonment and married women were counted as their husbands' property, it is no wonder that opera could only portray true traumas of our civilization in fairytale guise. Only here could individuals rebel against the overpowering roles ascribed by patriarchal society.

The ghost king Keikobad as an invisible overfather who is always represented by messengers, the hunting emperor who sees women only as prey, and the dyer who protests in vain against having to serve as a birthing machine - they are all let loose on each other in a Freudian dream world.

Richard Strauss' melodious and palatable music provides the perfect backdrop for the highly emotional outbursts of the protagonists.
