After years of research, Ulli Lust returns with her large-scale non-fiction comic about the beginnings of art and the importance of empathy for the survival of our species: a forgotten world unfolds around the archaic female figurines, in which the hero's journey was a group affair that could only be passed together, by women, men, children or even non-binary people in sometimes richly adorned roles.
"Die Frau als Mensch" was the first comic to be honored with the German Non-Fiction Prize.
Ulli Lust, born in Vienna in 1967, is an Austrian comic artist and illustrator. Her comic "Heute ist der letzte Tag vom Rest deines Lebens" (avant-verlag) received a great deal of international attention and was honored with the Ignatz Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. This was followed by "Flughunde" (based on Marcel Beyer) and "Wie ich versuchte, ein guter Mensch zu sein" (both Suhrkamp). Ulli Lust is one of the most important German-speaking comic artists; she teaches drawing and comics at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
