Ursula Krechel. The Minister. (Klett-Cotta)
Author reading and discussion in the New German Literature series
For Eva Patarak's son, having to speak to his mother is a crime against the state. For Eva, on the other hand, it is a crime that her son and she are apparently being spied on. What is the aim of Latin teacher Silke Aschauer's surveillance? Is she trying to write a novel? Do the cruel family relationships of antiquity that she prepares for class not offer enough material for fascination? One thing is certain: Silke is far from pulling all the strings. The publisher promises nothing less than a "cultural history of all women" in the blurb. In any case, it is a history of the violence suffered by women - from history to the present day. A dense, intelligent novel. The 2025 Büchner Prize winner Ursula Krechel presents her novel at the Heine Haus.
"With her, the German Academy for Language and Poetry is honoring an author who, in her poems, plays, radio plays, novels and essays, counters the devastation of German history and the hardening of the present with the power of her literature. [...] The theme of self-assertion, rediscovery and further development of female authorship runs as a common thread through her entire oeuvre." Jury of the Georg Büchner Prize, July 15, 2025
