Nobody would have expected an uncontrollable "problem child" to be awarded the Order of the British Empire, least of all John Davidson himself. In the early 1980s, John (Scott Ellis Watson) was growing up in a small Scottish town when he began to suffer from severe nervous tics at the age of 12. With the onset of a condition diagnosed years later as Tourette's syndrome, his life becomes an endless gauntlet. Neither at school nor at home are his tics and spontaneous swearing seen as symptoms, instead he is admonished, teased and even punished. Almost 15 years later, John (Robert Aramayo) is still living with his mother (Shirley Henderson) in his mid-20s. He takes such strong medication that the side effects rob him of almost all courage to face life. A chance encounter with his school friend Murray and his mother Dottie (Maxine Peak) finally turns things around. Dottie is a nurse and accepts John for who he is. She takes him into her family and even finds him a job as assistant to the community center janitor Tommy (Peter Mullan). A hilarious job interview, in which Tommy reacts to John's tics and curses like no other, lays the foundation for an intimate friendship between the two. And slowly John finds the courage and confidence to lead a self-determined life and realizes how valuable his experiences are for others.
