Prof. Julia Trinkert (Heinrich Heine University) invites you to learn more about art and architecture in medieval Northern Europe during your lunch break! Come to the Haus der Universität to engage with completely different topics, to get your mind off things or to relax from everyday (work and family) life. Listen in for as long as you have time: Numerous well-known works of art and buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in the Rhineland, such as Cologne Cathedral or the Golden Madonna in Essen. But what examples are we familiar with from Scandinavia? Over a thousand years ago, a social transformation took place there that led to widespread Christianization. The image of the militant, "cultureless" Vikings still lingers today. The lecture series aims to change this one-sided view and show that the people of Northern Europe, regardless of their religion, were closely linked politically and economically with the European continent throughout the Middle Ages. The spread of Christianity ultimately led to a cultural flourishing of which you will get an impression.
