Vortrag: "Größte Experimente für kleinste Teilchen"

In the organizer's words:

The "Karl Heinz Althoff Lecture Series on Particle Physics" at the Deutsches Museum Bonn continues: On Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 6:00 pm, Dr. Kristof Schmieden will present "Biggest Experiments for Smallest Particles".

In his lecture, visitors will gain an understandable insight into modern particle physics and the research work at CERN. Central questions of current basic research will be highlighted: What is our world made of at its core, what forces act between the building blocks of matter, and what mysteries are still unsolved? The unique experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and how huge detectors make tiny particles visible.

Special attention will be paid to the role of modern methods of artificial intelligence, which have become indispensable in analyzing the enormous amounts of data. Finally, we will take a look into the future: what new accelerators are planned and what discoveries could lie ahead?

The lecture is aimed at the general public and invites you to discover the fascination of the smallest particles in the largest experiments of our time.

The presentation of the certificates for the Physics Brawl competition will take place during the lecture. The young people worked in teams to solve tricky tasks and thus qualified for a fantastic prize: a visit to the German Aerospace Center! The award ceremony for the Physics Brawl regional competition is a highlight of the event, and we are looking forward to seeing lots of physics-loving pupils. The digital physics competition is supported by the Sparkasse KölnBonn Knowledge Foundation and the University of Bonn.
