The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. A war that has been unending in eastern Ukraine since 2014 has since been expanded into a relentless war of aggression against the whole of Ukraine and its citizens. Russia is not inexperienced when it comes to wars of aggression: the Chechen wars in 1994 and 1999, the Georgian war in 2008 and Russia's military deployment in the Syrian war in 2015 served as a blueprint for the invasion of Ukraine. Nevertheless, Russia's aggressive and expansionist power politics continue to be trivialized in parts of the left. We therefore want to take a closer look at the political situation there and Russia's colonial history.

Anastasia Tikhomirova is a German-Russian journalist, moderator and cultural scientist. She has been with DIE ZEIT since 2024 and previously wrote for taz and Jungle World, among others. In 2021, she completed the Eastern Europe Fellowship of the International Journalism Programs at Novaya Gazeta in Moscow. Medium magazine voted her one of the country's top 30 to 30-year-old journalists in 2023. She is also at the end of her Master's degree in Eastern European Studies and Interdisciplinary Research on Antisemitism. In October 2023, her first journalistic anthology "stromlinienunförmig" was published by edition assemblage.
