He loves her. She doesn't love him. But someone else loves him, who is not allowed to show her love. What sounds like a classic love story is transformed by Shakespeare in his famous comedy into an entertaining play with everything "you want": Love, deception, wit and passion. A shipwreck washes Viola up on the coast of Illyria. To protect herself in a foreign land, she disguises herself as a man, calls herself Cesario and goes to the court of Duke Orsino. He unsuccessfully courts Olivia and now senses his chance in the unusual newcomer. Cesario is to seek out the brittle countess on Orsino's behalf and win her over. Success comes quickly, albeit in a completely different way than planned: Olivia falls head over heels for Cesario - i.e. Viola - who, however, as Viola - i.e. Cesario - has long been in love with Orsino. And he, too, suddenly feels attracted to Cesario and doesn't know what's happening to him. When Viola's twin brother, who was thought to have drowned, suddenly turns up and the steward Malvolio gets his hopes up for Olivia, the chaos is perfect and the love merry-go-round is unstoppable.
