This musical journey traces the development of funk from its roots in African music, soul and jazz , through James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic, Labelle and Manu Dibango, to the pioneering influences of new wave and hip-hop. Plausible contextualizations into the political life of US-American society are just as successful here as pithy anecdotes and musical explanations that make even the most nimble YouTube tutorials look pale, thanks to a colourful group of illustrious comrades-in-arms(Fred Wesley, George Clinton, Nona Hendryx and many more), famous contemporary witnesses and many more.), famous contemporary witnesses (e.g. David Byrne) and eloquent experts (e.g. Questlove) - and David Bowie, Prince, Fela Kuti, Elton John and many more greet us from the archive images!
Here the cinema seat becomes a dance floor, here the party starts in the cinema and not just afterwards - and it could happen that Funkadelic's infamous request is realized in reverse: Free your ass, your head will follow!
