In the summer of 1933, the political situation in Europe comes to a head. After adventurous escapes, the Mann family is also stranded in Sanary-sur-Mer, a picturesque fishing village on the French Mediterranean. And now they all know neither forwards nor backwards. Florian Illies tells of the grief over the loss of home and possessions, the fear of Nazi looting, of melancholy, defiance and passion (S. Fischer).
