A Roman slave rebels against oppression and starts an uprising. The film version of this historically documented story is one of the greatest cinema classics of the 20th century. Kirk Douglas plays the central character, with Tony Curtis, Peter Ustinov and Herbert Lom in other roles. The film is not only a monumental testimony to the power of the reception of antiquity in film, but also to the way modern social issues are addressed in the confrontation with antiquity.
