Tarot cards and horoscopes, tinctures and healing stones - esotericism is often dismissed as harmless or, if at all, seen as a danger to individuals. However, when people separate themselves more and more from their environment and no longer allow contrary thoughts, this is not only a sad individual fate, but can also become a danger to our democracy and society. Because those who think and act in opposites such as "me against the ignorant" no longer see themselves as part of a common good that is strengthened by each individual.

In combination with conspiracy beliefs, right-wing extremist ideas, anti-feminism or anti-Semitism, esotericism can also become decidedly anti-democratic when fellow human beings become enemy images. In his interactive lecture, esotericism and conspiracy expert Matthias Pöhlmann explains how strong the links between esotericism and conspiracy beliefs are in Germany and what different forms they take - from hostility towards science to right-wing esoteric influencers.
