Former State Secretary Dr. Peter Tauber talks about the challenges facing the Bundeswehr

The Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, which violated international law, abruptly ended hopes for a lasting peaceful order in Europe. War is back on our continent. As in the Cold War, the Bundeswehr's focus today is once again on national and alliance defense. "Special assets", "return to compulsory military service", "suitability for war" or "protection of critical infrastructure" are topics that are causing tense political debates. New questions arise for the Bundeswehr: is it up to the new challenges? Where are changes urgently needed? What role do society and politics play in this?
Dr. Peter Tauber, who was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Defence from 2018 to 2021, is one person who is still preoccupied with these questions. Moderated by Colonel Dr. Frank Hagemann, Commander of the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences, he will talk about what he believes is necessary for the Bundeswehr to guarantee Germany's security in the present and future. In the subsequent discussion, former State Secretary Dr. Tauber will answer questions from the audience.
