We live in an "age of islands" - an era characterized both by their disappearance and by an unprecedented boom in newly created artificial islands. In his lecture, the speaker will examine floating cities as a special case of such islands, condensing their political, socio-economic, ecological and future-related potential. The lecture combines exemplary designs of current oceanic settlement projects with an architectural "past future" of floating city designs from their heyday in the 1960s and 1970s and discusses the ongoing speculative potential of an urbanistic turn to the marine space for ecological, economic and social concepts of order.
