Why do so many people vote for politicians like Donald Trump, Javier Milei or Alice Weidel? Where does this growing desire to destroy the status quo come from? Based on extensive empirical research, sociologists Carolin Amlinger and Oliver Nachtwey have investigated the causes of this development. The central thesis in their book Zerstörungslust: the current revolt is directed less against individual elites than against the feeling of being stuck in a blocked society.

In an interview, Oliver Nachtwey explains why powerlessness and devaluation have such a mobilizing effect today and what fear has to do with this desire for destruction.
