Hannah Arendt: activist, media star and fearless thinker "without railings". She became famous with her study on the emergence of totalitarian rule. She is controversial for her diagnosis of the "banality of evil". She is admired for her tireless and fearless advocacy of freedom of thought and an open society.
Original quotes from Arendt's essays and letters, read by Nina Hoss, and atmospheric archive footage create an intimate portrait of an intellectual who never lost her pride despite the Holocaust and exile. The film shows how Arendt, as a Jew and resistance fighter, sought to understand the world - and why her thoughts on the catastrophes of the 20th century speak directly to us in the here and now.
