Aegis is a bookshop full of tradition and intellectual heritage. A ship full of treasures. This bookshop and publishing house emerged from the spirit of resistance against the National Socialists: founded by publishing bookseller Ernst G. S. Bauer, Aegis was also the bookshop where Suhrkamp publisher Siegfried Unseld did his apprenticeship and Otl Aicher was responsible for the design. There were also close links with the Scholl family and the Ulm University of Art and Design.
In April 1946, Aegis Verlag received one of the first publishing licenses of the post-war period.

Rasmus Schöll took over the reins in 2018, at a time when books were once again being "pronounced dead". The "Aegis ship" was about to set sail for open waters again as one of the last three-division houses in Germany (publishing house, bookshop and antiquarian bookshop).
We scrubbed, painted and worked hard to make Aegis what it is today, a magical place for books and people, run with a lot of love and passion for books. Here, we go down untrodden paths and follow the founding idea: to convey books that have a meaning for our society, democracy and ultimately for our world. A place of words, literature, encounters and humanity - for the future of books. Aegis Buchhandlung Ulm has had a sister bookshop in Söflingen since March 2021. Finally no longer alone, this also applies to Aegis owner Rasmus Schöll: the future of the Aegis bookshop in Söflingen is being shaped by 26-year-old Franziska Pentz from Illertiss, who is also the owner in Söflingen. The literature and cultural studies scholar has been part of Aegis since summer 2020 and shares Rasmus Schöll's visions and ideas for innovative, young booksellers. In 2022, the Aegis Café was added as a third place for enjoyment, literature and culture.
