After the end of the eponymous fish smokehouse in 1973/74, the smokehouse at Preetzer Straße 35 in Gaarden became a cultural center for various projects and events. Concerts, dance events and comedy at the weekends were complemented by club meetings, local social projects and afternoon care for children during the week.

Today, the Räucherei is a permanent fixture in Gaarden's cultural scene for concerts and clubbing events.

The Räucherei can also be hired by the day for private events, company parties and other events.

During the week there is also the possibility for clubs or communities to rent the premises on a regular basis.
