Info and history

In the middle of the city center, just a few minutes' walk from the main train station, the Astra Theater with its small "Luna" auditorium is probably the most centrally located of Essen's art house cinemas. Astra & Luna are primarily first-run cinemas. However, numerous special programs such as previews, original versions and special film series are also shown. The series "Le cinéma en version originale", in which original French versions with subtitles are shown on the fourth Wednesday of every month in collaboration with the Deutsch-Französisches Kulturzentrum Essen, is a firm fixture in Essen's cinema scene. Every Monday is also cinema day with reduced admission for everyone.

The large auditorium and foyer have been kept in their original 1950s style. In addition to the selected program, they offer a wonderful ambience for a somewhat different cinema experience. It is also possible to book the Astra for an event beyond a movie screening, for example for lectures, presentations or company meetings. The Luna cinema hall is ideal for booking a private screening.
