Makroscope is located in the heart of Mülheim's city center, opposite the town hall tower. It emerged from several art and cultural initiatives in the independent scene and bought the building as an association in 2018. Almost 200 members currently make the operation possible.

The Makroscope aims to be an independent, open and interdisciplinary place for art and culture - with a special heart for niches of all kinds. The first floor of the building offers an event room for concerts, lectures and bar evenings. It is a meeting and opportunity space for all kinds of cultural uses. A further room, which is multifunctional and used for exhibitions, workshops and film screenings, adjoins it. The Museum of Photocopying is also located on the first floor and houses an internationally significant collection on the history, technology and art of photocopying in one room. The upper floors house studios, a seminar room with a small library and printing workshop, the headquarters of the Ana Ott record label, as well as an artists' apartment where guests of the Mülheim Theater are accommodated. In the basement there is a photo lab, a printing workshop and a band rehearsal room.

Our self-image as an independent, self-managed and non-commercial house with an anti-fascist consciousness is non-negotiable. We want to enable democratic, open, accessible and low-hierarchy structures for everyone. Interested individuals or groups who want to implement their ideas in the house are very welcome. Other art associations and political groups also meet regularly at the Makroscope.

It is this diversity with its surprising synergy effects that we want to promote and that is at the heart of the project. The interdisciplinary combination of artistic positions with a broad cultural program is what makes the Makro so unique.
