The new theater Halle was opened on April 8, 1981. Prior to this, the acting ensemble of the then Landestheater Halle - led by acting director Peter Sodann - had been looking for a new venue of its own, as it had to share the large classical stage with the opera, orchestra and ballet in the three-section house (today's opera house), which meant that it only put on a few performances a month. The then almost hundred-year-old space of the Großer Kaisersaal in Große Ulrichstraße - which was used as the "Cinema of German-Soviet Friendship" and was structurally in a rather poor state - was discovered as a possible fulfillment of the desire for an additional venue and, after some back and forth between the city's culture and politics, was taken over and converted into a theater space. Peter Sodann and his actors and actresses pitched in and had a lot to do with bricklaying and plastering work and procuring building materials before their new theater - a large hall with flexible audience traverses and therefore convertible stage spaces - was ready for performances and the surrounding rooms could be used as actors' dressing rooms, for example. And the construction work did not stop for twenty years. Gradually, further venues were added to the building complex: a courtyard theater in 1987, the "Tintenfass" (a small venue that today belongs to the puppet theater as the "Salon") in 1993, the "Kommode" (which was temporarily called the "Werft" and is now called the "Kammer") as a smaller peep-box stage in 1998; technical workrooms and offices were created and it was completed in 2002: the "Kulturinsel" - a unique inner-city ensemble in Germany with theaters - in addition to the new theater, i.e. Halle's drama theater, the puppet theater under the direction of Christoph Werner had also moved in next to us - gallery, gastronomy and many other cultural projects and ambitions. After Peter Sodann, the idea generator and conversion driver, retired in 2005, Christoph Werner took over the directorship of the new theater for a few years. During this period, the only invitation to date of a production of the new theater to the renowned Berlin Theatertreffen as well as the participation in the organization of the festival "Theater der Welt 2008" took place. In 2009, the temporarily independent new theater was reunited with the other divisions in the "Theater Oper und Orchester GmbH Halle". Matthias Brenner has been at the helm of the new theater Schauspiel Halle since 2011. After the closure of Halle's children's and youth theater in 2012, the ensemble and many of the Thalia Theater's employees also came to the Kulturinsel, and today the - now shrunken and united - acting ensemble of the new theater/Thalia Theater performs plays for adults as well as those for children and young people. From the 2023/24 season, Mille Dalsgaard and Mareike Mikat will take over the management of the drama department at Bühnen Halle.
