Whether young or old, technology fan, model railroad enthusiast or railroad photographer - the railroad scene fascinates with the original building ensemble of the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf shunting yard and depot. Built after 1898 and used until 1996, this historic railroad site was a hub for raw materials, semi-finished products and goods from the region and around the world.

With a total area of 260,000 m², the Schauplatz Eisenbahn is the largest railroad museum in Europe and one of the most important museums of railroad history in Germany. Experience living railroad history at an authentic location.

The Schauplatz has an extensive collection of steam, diesel and electric locomotives from various series as well as historic passenger and freight wagons. Visit unique technical facilities, such as the world's only rope pay-off system, the historic supply and feeding systems and our workshop from the steam locomotive era.

Several exhibitions provide interesting facts on the subject of railroads: "History of the railroads in Saxony and Central Germany", "Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf goods station", "Railways as world changers", "In the service of power", "Railway technology". Experience the railroad from the driver's perspective along our 300m long signal garden. Visit the driver's cab of our locomotive 441338. Let yourself be fascinated by our 26 m² model railroad layout in HO scale every first Saturday of the month. And enjoy a round trip on our field railway layout at the weekends.

Children and families can experience a special learning and adventure experience with our "Schauplatz-Rallye". For schools, we offer guided tours and workshops suitable for children.
