The Palace Museum was established on the initiative of the last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine in the former state rooms and living quarters of Darmstadt's old palace. The works of art in the museum, which has been open to the public since 1924, mainly came from the old palace inventory, which had been left to the Grand Duke as private property after his deposition by the People's State of Hesse.
