A Night of Knowing Nothing is Payal Kapadia’s bold debut, told through letters from a film student to her lover, separated by caste. Set against rising Hindu nationalism, the film documents the killing of journalists like Gauri Lankesh and the arrest of activists under Modi’s regime. Dalit and Muslim communities face violence and exclusion. Yet resistance persists – in protests, in dreams, in love. Kapadia blends the personal and political, showing how memory and desire can become acts of defiance.

A Night of Knowing Nothing ist Payal Kapadias mutiges Debüt, erzählt in Briefen einer Filmstudentin an ihren Geliebten, von dem sie durch das Kastensystem getrennt ist. Vor dem Hintergrund des aufkommenden Hindu-Nationalismus dokumentiert der Film die Ermordung von Journalist*nnen wie Gauri Lankesh und die Verhaftung von Aktivist*nnen unter Modis Regierung. Dalit und muslimische Gemeinschaften erleben Gewalt und Ausgrenzung. Doch der Widerstand bleibt – in Protesten, in Träumen, in der Liebe. Kapadia verbindet Persönliches und Politisches: Erinnerung und Begehren werden zu Akten des Widerstands.
