Im Herzen von Nairobi verfällt die McMillan Memorial Library – eine Bibliothek aus der Kolonialzeit, die einst weißen Menschen vorbehalten war. Shiro Koinange und Angela Wachuka haben es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, diesen Ort zu renovieren und zu dekolonisieren, um ihn in einen Raum für Kunst, Kultur, Bildung und Austausch zu verwandeln. Acht Jahre lang begleiteten die Filmemacher:innen Maia Lekow und Christopher King ihre Reise zwischen Verhandlungen mit der lokalen Gemeinschaft, Politiker:innen und Förderern und den Herausforderungen, ein Vermächtnis neu zu erfinden. HOW TO BUILD A LIBRARY ist eine Einladung zum Dialog über die Wiederaneignung geschichtsträchtiger Orte – eine kollektive Geste der Erinnerung, der Schöpfung und der Transformation.

In the heart of Nairobi, the McMillan Memorial Library – a colonial-era library once reserved for white people – is falling into ruin. Shiro Koinange and Angela Wachuka are undertaking to renovate and decolonise this place in order to turn it into a space dedicated to art, culture, education and exchange. For eight years, filmmakers Maia Lekow and Christopher King followed their journey, between negotiations with the local community, politicians and patrons, and the challenges of reinventing a legacy. HOW TO BUILD A LIBRARY is an invitation to dialogue about the reappropriation of places steeped in history – a collective gesture of memory, creation and transformation.
